August

21-22    Off-Road Ride of Death [Valley]

The Date

August 21-22, 2010 (Saturday and Sunday)

The Location

The ride will start from the Olancha Sand Dunes located at the South end of Owens Lake (dry) that is a few miles East of Olancha, California (located on Highway 395). On Saturday morning, breakfast will be at The Roadhouse Cafe in Olancha followed by a ride departure around 8:30 AM. Note: I will be arriving to Olancha on Friday night for a camp-over and it is highly advised that ride attendees do the same. Depending on the group size, we can likely carpool, share bike trailer space, split gas cost and such.

The Ride: Day One

In general, the ride will incorporate terrain such as: small sand dunes, scrub brush, dirt roads, river wash, hills with rocks, and such. While the terrain isn’t overly difficult, the pack will be moving at a good pace … so accomplished riders only. The route will start with riders crossing the Olancha Sand Dunes, riding over the Coso Mountains, and traversing Centennial Flat to the ghost town of Darwin. After some exploring, the ride will continue to Darwin Falls for some exploring of old mining areas and maybe a dip in a cool stream. From there we’ll double back to Darwin to cut over to Saline Valley Road that will take us over the Panamint Range to “Teakettle Junction” and the famous “Racetrack”. Afterwards, we’ll tackle Lippincott Trail, traverse Saline Valley and camp over at a remote hot springs replete with palm trees, built in hot tubs, etc.

The Ride: Day Two

Some exploring of the Saline Valley area will occur in the morning before ascending a route up the Inyo Mountains to a ghost town at Cerro Gordo Peak (8,500 ft). From there we’ll descend the long grade to the town of Keeler, skirt the edges of the Owens Valley and then ride into a remote drive-in mineshaft. Afterwards we’ll ride back to the Olancha Sand Dunes, pack up and head back to Los Angeles. The Bike(s) While most any dirt bike will work, I highly encourage: - desert type bikes (250X, 450X, XR650) versus race bikes (250R, 450R) - dual-sport bikes (Honda Transalp, KTM Adventure, etc.) are welcome, but riding the sand sections may be tricky for them - No 2-strokes allowed due to pre-mix gas issues

The Plan

It will be hot … very hot. Probably well over 100-degrees during the day. However, we’ll be moving fast and will often be at higher elevations, so it shouldn’t be too bad. If you don’t like heat, have any medical conditions, or such … then this ride isn’t for you. Since we’re going to be covering some decent mileage and sleeping over, we’ll need to haul supplies. There is a chance one HERC’er will bring his Polaris Ranger ATV… if so, he can haul some supplies such as fuel and food. However, plan on bringing a backpack, tank bag or such to haul your own supplies.

The Rules

While riding in the Owens Valley doesn’t require any type of permit, we want to be as eco-friendly as possible. Thus, all bikes should have a full exhaust system with along with a spark arrestor.

The Contact

Contact HERC Off-Road Director John Kiewicz as soon as possible so that a plan can be made regarding on how much fuel will be needed, food, carpooling and such. Please don’t wait until a few days before to RSVP. E-mail: john_kiewicz@ahm.acura.com

PS

HERC will provide the following reimbursements:

1. Gas reimbursement: $30 for Friday or Saturday (which ever day HERC participants travel) and $30 for Sunday per person. If a HERC member carpools as a passenger, then there will be $10 reimbursement for a second person in one vehicle. There will be a gas total of $60 for one person, $80 for two people in one vehicle, $100 for three in one vehicle, and so on. To avoid confusion to the treasurer, the driver of the vehicle will pay the entire amount, submit for reimbursement and then the driver will reimburse his passengers as needed. Passenger(s) names will be indicated on the reimbursement form.

2. Meal Allowance (paid for by Ride Director): One meal (breakfast, $10 max) for Saturday and one meal for Sunday (late lunch, $15 max). The ride director will pay for the entire meal for HERC attendees and will expense the cost to the club treasurer. Any excess above the amounts shown should be split up and not expensed.

3. Drinks (paid for by Ride Director): $5.00 per person per day.

12 - 14 On-Road "Wild Hogs" Ride (LA to Sequoia National Forest to San Luis Obispo to LA)

Adrian Staicu (310-783-3361) is organizing an on-road overnight ride through the southern part of California via a loop starting the Sunday after the Labor Day weekend. All on-road motorcycle types are welcomed as long as the rider can handle the seat time. This will take us through Sequoia National Forest, across to San Luis Obispo and back down to LA. The ride is starting on 8:00 AM Sunday September 12, and ending on Tuesday afternoon September 14th, 2010. For those unfortunate ones who are still working, like myself, vacation time will be needed for this ride. I suggest taking Wednesday the 15th off to allow for rest. We plan around 300 miles per day average to allow for pleasure riding.

Please read the attached map for more information on the ride and location.

If interested in attending, please e-mail or call Adrian so that he can have an idea of the group size. He needs to know size of the group to see about hotel reservations. We have four guys already signed up for it.
